Police, Airforce engage in gun battle in Imo, one hospitalised
Police operatives attached to a First Bank branch in Imo state on Thursday engaged Airforce officers in gun battle.
According to reports, a police offer allegedly shot an Airforce officer who had visited the bank’s branch on Douglas road after both officers engaged in a scuffle.
The policeman guarding the bank tried to stop the Airforce officer from using the ATM machine, reports say.
He reportedly denied the Airforce officer access to the ATM because he was bearing a firearm despite that he had his military camouflage on.
Eyewitnesses say the Airforce officer resisted the police officer immediately, leading to an argument.
It was during the ensuing scuffle that the policeman shot the Airforce officer.
The colleagues of the wounded officer reportedly stormed the bank premises in numbers and engaged the policemen on a free for all fight.
Both groups shot sporadically, prompting by-passers to scamper to safety.
It reportedly took the intervention of high ranking police and military officers to calm the warring group.
The shot Airforce officer was rushed to the hospital, where he was said to be recuperating.
The First Bank branch where the incident occurred was shut down immediately, as armed policemen cordoned off the area.
