Photos: Police shut UNILAG gate as protesting students won’t back down
Suspended student union leaders are joined by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and other relevant bodies at University of Lagos (UNILAG) main gate.
The students are protesting the decision of the school to rusticate 11 students who criticised the school management.

The protest, which has so far been peaceful, coincided with the visit of India’s Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari to the school. Ansari delivered a lecture titled “Legacy of Indian Freedom Movement” at UNILAG Main Auditorium.
Police were called in to prevent protesting students from entering the school. The officers locked the main gate as more students join the protest.
“I joined the protest because UNILAG is becoming unfair to us,” a demonstrator told NewsroomNG.
“The indemnity form they forced us to sign has taken away our hope. Lecturers have become stricter and students cannot fight for their rights.
“The rustication of our colleagues over anti-management social media posts is unfair,” she said.
Students say they want the Indian PM to witness what they call the injustice UNILAG is meting out on them.
They demand the school reverse its decision to rusticated union leaders suspended for leading a protest in April and for criticising Vice Chancellor Prof. Rahman Bello on social media.
They also demand the reinstatement of suspended UNILAG student union (ULSU) as well as Bello’s resignation.

We were unable to reach the school management for comments.
