In photos: Mugabe holds $1million birthday party featuring 92kg cake in drought zone
February 28, 2016
Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, turned 92 on the 21st of February and, quite expectedly, decided to celebrate in grand style.
The lavish birthday party was fixed for Saturday, February 27 in Masvingo province.
Never mind that Masvingo has been worst hit in the country’s worst drought since the early 1990s with 75% of its staple maize crop lost to parched conditions.
The party cost an estimated $1 million and featured several cakes including a huge 92kg cake.
Yet, Zimbabwe has appealed for nearly $1.6bn (£1.2bn) to help pay for grain and other food, the Guardian reports.
Mugabe is Zimbabwe’s only president since the country gained independence in 1980.
