Nigeria’s “Father of Democracy” Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola died 17 years ago, and Nigerian activists have not forgotten him.

MKO Abiola was a popular Nigerian businessman and politician who is “presumed” winner of the 1993 presidential election in the country.

The poll, despite being adjudged free and fair, was declared inconclusive and annulled by the military government.

Abiola was arrested after he declared himself winner.

He died in detention in 1998.

Nigerian activists led by Dr. Joe Odumakin paid tribute to the “best, most peacefully elected president Nigeria never had” at his tomb site on Tuesday.
