In a key political gathering, governors elected under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are convening in Jos, the capital of Plateau State. The meeting, held at the Plateau State Government House in Little Rayfield, marks the fifth such gathering in 2024 and is centered around the critical theme of party unity.

The ongoing discussions are expected to address the state of the PDP, strategize on overcoming internal challenges, and outline plans for the party’s role in national development. It is seen as a pivotal moment for the PDP, especially as it seeks to rebuild its influence ahead of future elections.

On Friday evening, the PDP governors and various stakeholders gathered for a lively gala night at the government house’s banquet hall. The event was attended by prominent party figures including Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Kefas Agbu (Taraba), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), and host Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau. In addition, the deputy governors of Bayelsa, Enugu, and Plateau states were also present, highlighting the importance of this gathering.

The evening also saw notable contributions from senior party figures such as Illiya Damagum, the acting national chairman of the PDP; former Plateau governor Jonah David Jang; former Kaduna governor Ahmed Makarfi; and Babangida Aliyu, former governor of Niger. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, the chairman of the PDP ministers’ forum, was also in attendance.

Governor Mutfwang, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to all those who attended the event and reiterated the party’s commitment to restoring its reputation as the foremost political force in Nigeria. He stressed that, while the meeting was primarily for the governors, the presence of national stakeholders highlighted the collective effort needed to stabilize the party and reassert its relevance in Nigerian politics.

“The PDP is a party of hope for Nigerians, and we must work together to ensure it remains a unifying force for good governance,” Mutfwang said.

Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed, also reflected on the party’s resilience despite facing internal challenges. He acknowledged the “minor” issues within the party but reassured supporters that the PDP remains united. “We are unbreakable,” Mohammed said, affirming the governors’ commitment to working together for the benefit of the Nigerian people.

The PDP, since 2022, has been grappling with internal discord, with factions within the party divided over leadership issues, particularly concerning the position of acting national chairman. While one faction calls for the removal of Damagum, another backs his continued leadership.
