Ondo Election: Impressive turnout, bribery attempts, accusations, characterise proceedings

There has been an impressive turnout for election proceedings in Ondo State, as citizens thronged their respective polling booths to vote for their next governor.

Earlier today, simultaneous accreditation processes went on peacefully in wards across the state.

There have been some uproar in some areas however, as an APC chieftain, Tunji Light Ariyo, was accused of attempting to share money to buy votes at St Thomas, Akure.

In a similar incident, an APC chairman was chased away by citizens in ward 2, Akure while he was allegedly trying to buy votes at Arakale.

Elsewhere, APC candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu has said report reaching him is that PDP is rigging in the creek areas and that the military have refused to yield to the complaints.

PDP governorship flag bearer, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede who voted at 10:46am at gbogi/Isinkan Ward 02, Sacred Heart PU 009, Akure, urged citizens not to leave their polling units after casting their votes.

“Some have been in the queue for three hours in different parts of the state and they have not been able to vote. INEC should not disenfranchise our voters. After voting, don’t leave your polling units. I too will not leave until the votes are counted. By the grace of God, I will be victorious,” he said.

The outgoing governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko had earlier accused INEC of compromising the outcome of the election, echoing his Ekiti State counterpart, Ayodele Fayose’s complaints.

No fewer than 1,280,580 voters with Permanent Voter Cards would decide who the governor would be out of the 28 contestants in Saturday’s governorship election.

Although 1,659,186 voters were registered for the election, 378,606 did not collect collect their PVCs.
