Olubadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji – the record label boss who promoted K1 to stardom, dies at 93
The Olubadan of Ibadan Oba Saliu Adetunji who founded Baba Laje Records, one of Nigeria’s leading record label companies in the 1960s to 1980s, is dead.
Adetunji, who started his career as a fashion designer after moving to Lagos, later delved into music marketing in 1960. He founded Baba Laje records, and it was on the back of the record label that fuji music star K1 De Ultimate rose to stardom.
Baba Laje records, with other subsidiaries like Omo Aje Sound Studio and Adetunji Label, was also home to fuji music stars like Salami Balogun, Alhaji Amoda Shijuade, Daudu Epo Akara, Saka Olayigbade, and many more.
Adetunji, a former Balogun of Ibadan, was crowned the 41st Olubadan in March 2016 and spent barely six years on the throne. Although he was third in line to become the Olubadan, his emergence followed the death of two high ranking chiefs before him.
Adeola Oloko, the spokesperson of Olubadan, did not pick calls from a Neusroom correspondent on Sunday morning, requesting details about the demise of the first class monarch.
