Old retirees protest in Osun, accuse state government of killing over 1,500 pensioners

Regular activities in Osun State came to a brief halt on Wednesday as hundreds of aggrieved pensioners took to the streets to protest the government’s failure to pay their gratuities.

Also part of the Osun State Civil Service retirees’ grouse with Aregbesola’s government is the payment of half pensions by his administration.

Led by Omoniyi Ilesanmi, the members of the Forum of 2011/2012 Retirees, assembled at Fakunle Comprehensive High School, Osogbo as early as 8:00am before embarking on a peaceful protest.

Messages such as “Rauf Aregbesola has killed over 1,500 pensioners in Osun State due to non-payment of our gratuities” were boldly displayed on the protesters’ placards.

The old retirees claimed that the bail-out funds issued by the federal government to several states in the country – including Osun – was not benefited from by its members.

One of the protesters said to journalists in the city that the state government’s refusal to pay pensioners their hard earned monies was the height of wickedness and they would not stop fighting for their rights.
