Obaseki Absent as Monday Okpebholo Sworn in as Edo State’s Governor
Monday Okpebholo was officially inaugurated as the 6th Governor of Edo State on Tuesday, marking the start of a new political era in the South-South state. His swearing-in ceremony, held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, followed a highly contested election that saw the All-Progressives Congress (APC) reclaim the governor’s seat after eight years of leadership under Godwin Obaseki, who was absent at the ceremony to formally hand over power to his successor.

Okpebholo, alongside his running mate Dennis Idahosa, took the oath of office at approximately 12:55 PM. The newly inaugurated governor then took a victory lap around the stadium in an open van, waving to an enthusiastic crowd of supporters who cheered his arrival.

In his inaugural speech, Okpebholo expressed deep gratitude to the people of Edo State for the overwhelming support that propelled him to victory. He described his election as a victory for democracy, emphasizing the trust placed in him and his deputy. “Democracy has triumphed again in our dear state,” he declared. “This is a humbling moment made possible by you all. Today, you have officially given me the mandate to preside over our state for the next four years. We will not betray the confidence you have reposed in us.”
The new governor outlined his administration’s priorities, focusing on enhancing the security of the state, improving infrastructure by connecting communities through better road networks, and fostering small businesses to boost the local economy. He reassured the people of Edo that their welfare would be his top priority.

The ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu; various APC governors; Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo; and former Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole, among others. Their presence highlighted the significance of the event and the APC’s renewed influence in the state.
