“Nigerian who committed suicide with wrapper was never our student,” authorities at UNIBEN say they have to clarify

While his sister dived into her books in another room; his mother outdoor; Daniel Iyoha reportedly took a wrapper, worked it around the ceiling fan in his room, and round his own neck. He killed himself.
That was about a month ago.
It was widely reported the late 27-year-old was a final-year law student of the University of Benin, (UNIBEN).
The authorities at the varsity say that claim is untrue. Although Iyoha was twice offered provisional admission into the school, he never paid the required fees, and so was never a student of the institution, they say.
“Iyoha (may God bless his soul) was not a duly admitted student of the University of Benin,” the school’s spokesperson, Mr. Michael Osaruyi, said in a statement on Thursday.
Osaruyi said UNIBEN had to make the clarification for the records.
“In as much as we would have loved to allow the deceased young man to rest in peace; we however, find it expedient to set the records straight,” the statement said.
“Late Daniel Iyoha, had indeed been offered provisional admission into the Department of Theatre Arts and Mass Communication for the 2009/2010 academic session.
“But he again applied for admission to study Political Science and Public Administration in the 2011/2012 academic session and was again given provisional admission.
“He nonetheless failed to pay the requisite and duly approved charges to complete the admission process and was therefore not a student of University of Benin.’’
The bereaved parents of the deceased would care less about the academic status of their departed son.
Residents of Obamwonyi Street, Off Universal Road, Benin City, who knew Iyoha said he was a gentleman who rarely quarreled with anyone.
He was also a devoted catholic who religiously graced the morning mass. The reason he took his own life remain a puzzle.
The day he died, Iyoha attended the morning mass as usual. He returned home, washed his clothes, tidied his room and stayed in all day.
He waited for his mother to leave the house before he took his life.
