Pascal Dozie, Former Chairman of MTN Nigeria dies at 86
The Nigerian business community is mourning the loss of one of its most revered pioneers. Pascal Gabriel Dozie, the trailblazing founder of the defunct Diamond Bank Plc and a titan of Nigerian enterprise, has passed away at the age of 85.
His death, which occurred on April 8—just one day before his 86th birthday—was confirmed in a heartfelt family statement released on Tuesday by his son, Uzoma Dozie.
“With deep sorrow, but with gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Pascal Gabriel Dozie,” the statement read.
“He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of unwavering Catholic faith. His life was marked by service–to God, his family, and his country.”
Dozie leaves behind his wife, Chinyere, children, grandchildren, and a profound legacy that touched thousands across Nigeria and beyond.
Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Dozie rose from modest beginnings to become a colossus in Nigerian banking and telecommunications. In 1990, he founded Diamond Bank, a visionary institution that would go on to redefine retail banking in Nigeria. The bank was eventually merged with Access Bank, but not before being handed over to his son, Uzoma, ensuring that the family’s legacy in finance continued.
Dozie’s influence extended beyond banking. He was the founding chairman of MTN Nigeria, where he played a key role in ushering in the mobile telecom revolution that transformed communication across the country.
His academic journey was as impressive as his professional one. A bright student from Our Lady’s School in Emekuku, he later attended the London School of Economics, where he earned a degree in economics and a master’s in administrative science.
Dozie’s leadership style, defined by humility, integrity, and a visionary approach to growth, earned him national and international recognition. Among his many honours was the prestigious title of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), awarded for his outstanding service to the nation.
The family expressed their gratitude for the time they shared with him, saying:
“We thank God for the gift of his life and the legacy he leaves behind. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
