Nigeria Government Apportions N700Million Plus To Dying Ajaokuta Company

The Federal government of Nigeria has apportioned a sum in excess of N700m from its 2024 budget to Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited.

The budget allocation is contained in the certified copy of the 2024 Fiscal Appropriation Act as displayed on the Budget Office website.

The exact figure, N729,185,304, is earmarked for the “supply of farm feed and farming materials for farmers in Obalende, Okofaji, Olowogbowo and Isale Eko areas of Lagos,” the copy details.

Another N100 million was allocated by the government to Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited for “Rehabilitation of road, supply and installation of solar street lights in Obalende, Okofaji Olowogbowo and Isale Eko areas of Lagos.”

Neusroom has also gathered that the government has budgeted N130 million under Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited in Kwara state for the “entrepreneurial development training and empowerment for women and youths across Kwara North Senatorial District, and supply and installation of 5 all-in-one solar street lights in some selected communities across Kwara South.”

In Niger state, the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited received the budget of  N200 million for the “Provision of all-in-one solar street lights with high breed Lumen and 80 Watts LED lights in some selected rural communities and farms in Niger East Senatorial District, Niger State.”

For “provision of all-in-one solar street lights with high breed Lumen and 80 Watts LED lights in some selected communities in Niger East Senatorial District,” N100 million was budgeted under Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited.

For “provision of all-in-one solar street lights with high breed Lumen and 80 Watts LED lights for Shiroro, Gurara and Bosso local government areas in Niger East Senatorial District, Niger State,” a further N100 million was budgeted under Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited.

The Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited was created by the Federal Ministry of Steel Development for the production of quality steel for Nigeria;s industrialisation.

Also known as Ajaokuta Steel Mill and located in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, the dying project kickstarted in 1979 has been perrenially plagued by mismanagement.
