The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, has asserted that the nation is in a state of retrogression, worse off than it was four decades ago. Speaking at the 2024 ASUU State of the Nation Conference in Abuja on Thursday, October 3, Osodeke emphasized the urgent need for systemic reform, attributing the crisis to pervasive corruption and leadership failures.

The conference, themed “Nigeria in a State of General Crisis: The Search for a New Path to Development,” aimed to address the nation’s declining circumstances and explore viable solutions to restore hope and progress. Osodeke painted a grim picture of the nation, describing it as “hopeless,” and criticized a governance framework he claimed is heavily influenced by foreign interests, benefiting only a privileged few while the majority of Nigerians languish in poverty.

“As we celebrate 64 years of independence, it is disheartening to note that our current situation is more dire than it was in 1984,” Osodeke remarked, highlighting the stark contrast between Nigeria’s vast resources and the widespread suffering among its citizens. He stressed the need for a reallocation of national resources towards the common good, urging leaders to prioritize the welfare of the populace.

Osodeke reiterated that ASUU’s mission extends beyond advocating for its members; it encompasses safeguarding and promoting the socio-economic and cultural interests of all Nigerians. Established in 1978, the union has long championed the cause of equitable governance and organized national forums to generate ideas for improvement.

Reflecting on the first ASUU State of the Nation Conference held at the University of Benin in 1984, Osodeke lamented the failure of successive governments to implement resolutions from that pivotal gathering. He pointed to this neglect as a significant factor contributing to the current challenges facing the nation.
