Up to 30 people are believed to have been killed after a lorry ran into a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in Nice, France.

Media reports say the incident took place on the famous Promenade des Anglais during a firework display.

“The driver of a van appears to have killed dozens. Stay in your homes for now. More info to follow,” Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi wrote on Twitter, confirming the incident.

Unconfirmed reports have it that shots were exchanged between police and the occupants of the lorry.

Sebastien Humbert, the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes region, told France’s BFM TV that “perhaps about 30 people” were dead and 100 injured.

There was “a lot of blood and without doubt many injured” at the scene, a local newspaper is reporting.

According to an AFP reporter, the shooting took place just as the firework display was ending.

“We saw people hit and bits of debris flying around.”

Apparently people mistook the shooting for fireworks..
