NCC Directs Telcos to Reactivate Lines, Extends NIN-SIM Linkage for Subscribers
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has instructed telecom operators in the country to unblock all phone lines that were disconnected due to issues with NIN-SIM verification over the weekend.
This decision follows reports that many telecom subscribers were unable to access their phone lines because their National Identification Numbers (NINs) could not be verified with their Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs).
“The consumer is our priority,” said the NCC in a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, the Commission’s Director of Public Affairs. “Considering the challenges these blockages have caused, we have directed all operators to reactivate all lines that were disconnected over the weekend.”

The NCC clarified that this is a temporary measure to allow consumers to properly link their NIN to their SIM.
“Reactivated consumers are to note that this is for a limited period,” the commission warned.
NCC Gives Reason For NIN-SIM linkage Policy
The NIN-SIM linkage policy, which began in December 2020, aims to enhance national security and ensure the national SIM ownership database is accurate.
“The NIN-SIM linkage policy aids in verifying and protecting users’ identities while also providing a critical infrastructure that supports access to the benefits of a robust digital economy for the citizenry,” the NCC explained.

On Saturday, after many subscribers’ lines were blocked, there was speculation that the barring of SIM cards was related to the upcoming nationwide protest expected to start in August.
However, in a statement released by the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and seen by Neusroom, reports suggesting that the ongoing subscriber line barring exercise is connected to the planned national protest, #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, were refuted.
“There’s absolutely no connection between the two. The NIN/SIM link registration deadline was earlier set for July 31, 2024,” said Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, ALTON Chairman, in the statement.
