NAFDAC Urges Compliance with Ban on Sachet and PET Bottle Alcohol

In a strong appeal aimed at curbing the availability of low-cost alcohol, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has called on manufacturers and distributors of alcoholic beverages to adhere strictly to the ban on sachet and PET bottle alcohol.

Speaking at the News Agency of Nigeria Forum in Abuja, Prof. Adeyeye reiterated the importance of enforcing the ban, emphasizing that the sale and distribution of alcohol in PET bottles have been prohibited since 2018. She urged stakeholders in the alcohol industry to comply with this regulation to protect public health fully.

The 2018 ministerial ban, which followed an agreement with the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria, introduced a phased withdrawal process for sachet and PET bottle alcohol. This process is now in its final stages, aiming for the complete removal of these products from the market.

Since the implementation of the ban, NAFDAC has stopped registering or renewing licenses for such products. The agency provided manufacturers with ample time to clear out existing stock and cease production. Prof. Adeyeye noted that educational campaigns and extensive engagements with stakeholders have been carried out to support compliance and raise awareness about the risks associated with these products.

Prof. Adeyeye also expressed deep concern about the rising alcohol consumption among teenagers and young adults, particularly pointing out that sachets make alcohol more affordable and accessible. This, she warned, poses significant risks to the well-being of young people and can have far-reaching consequences.

Reaffirming NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding public health, she emphasized the agency’s role in regulating and monitoring the market to ensure that harmful products do not reach consumers.
