NAFDAC Destroys ₦120 Billion Worth of Fake Products in Six Months
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) announced it destroyed over ₦120 billion seized items nationwide between October and December 2024.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, revealed that the agency’s operations targeted six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), confiscating fake medicines, counterfeit foods, and beverages.
“These products pose serious risks to public health,” Adeyeye warned in her holiday message, urging Nigerians to prioritize safety by buying only from credible outlets and avoiding unregistered items.
Recent enforcement efforts included major busts:
- Ibadan (Dec 11): Expired drugs worth ₦11 billion destroyed.
- Lagos (Nov): Fake medicines worth ₦300 million seized; counterfeit alcohol packaging centers dismantled, totaling ₦2 billion.
- Nasarawa State (Dec 19): Over ₦5 billion in expired rice confiscated; fake rice factories sealed.
- FCT Markets: 1,600+ bags of counterfeit rice worth ₦5 billion seized.
- Aba (Dec 16-17): Counterfeit beverages, oils, and revalidated food products worth ₦5 billion uncovered.
Prof. Adeyeye vowed even stricter enforcement in 2025, calling out “merchants of death” who profit from endangering lives.

“We will intensify actions against those compromising the quality of medicines and food,” she stated, promising an unrelenting fight in the coming year.
NAFDAC urged Nigerians to buy only registered products and watch for red flags like poor packaging or unusually low prices, which often signal counterfeit goods.
“When a product is too cheap, it is most likely compromised,” Adeyeye advised.
