Mpox: NCDC Records 48 Cases Across FCT And 19 States
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has now confirmed 48 cases of monkey pox (Mpox) across 35 local government areas in 19 states, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
The agency confirmed this via its website on Friday.
In an Mpox situation report for week 34 (August 25, 2024), it disclosed that there were 868 suspected cases across the states.
The agency however assured that no fatalities have been recorded from these cases.
“57 new suspected cases were reported in Epi week 34, 2024, compared with 25 cases reported in the previous week (Epi week 33).
“Eight confirmed cases were reported in week 34 compared with one (1) confirmed case reported in week 33, 2024.
“Twenty States and the FCT have recorded at least one confirmed case across thirty-five (35) Local Government Areas in 2024,” the report read in part.
The following states had Mpox case records thus: Cross River (five), Rivers (two), Bayelsa (six), Abia (one), Delta (two), Imo (one), Edo (one), FCT (two), Anambra (two) Lagos (one).

Others include: Zamfara (one), Plateau (two), Akwa Ibom (four), Nasarawa (one), Oyo (one), Kaduna (one), Ebonyi (one), Benue (three), Enugu (eight), Osun (two), Kebbi (one), and Plateau (two).
The records show the age distribution of these Mpox cases as: 17 cases among ages 0-10, seven cases among ages 11-20, nine cases among 21-30, eight cases among ages 31-40, and seven cases among ages 41-50.
The Mpox disease is a rare viral zoonotic infectious disease transmitted from animals to humans.
The disease first broke out in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but has now spread across several African countries.
