“The girl is undergoing treatment as her private parts were burnt and she needs counselling,” a local police officer said.

Saoke’s son said their mother perpetrated the shocking act to punish the hapless girl for wasting food.

“My mother tied my elder sister’s hands, beat her, soaked her with kerosene and burnt her,” the victim’s brother, Bonventure Okoth, told local media.

“She said she was punishing my sister for wasting maize flour,” he said.

Reports quoted neighbours who said Saoke was fond of beating up her children and threatening to set them on fire.

Okoth narrated how their mother returned home and found his elder sister frying maize flour.

She became livid, screamed at the teenager, took hold of her, tied her hands, gave her some beating, drenched her in kerosene, and lighted her up.

Okoth said his sister would have been burnt to death had neighbours, who heard the teenage girl scream for help, not intervened.
