Maiduguri Flood Disaster: Tinubu Assures Borno State of Federal Aid
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep concern over the recent flooding in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, which has displaced thousands of residents and affected key facilities, including the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the Post Office.
The flood, triggered by an overflow of the Alau Dam, is considered one of the worst the region has experienced in recent decades.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the people of Borno, especially those whose livelihoods have been devastated by the disaster. He also expressed sympathy for families who have been forced out of their homes.
“President Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the state, especially to the families that have lost their means of livelihood due to the disaster triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam,” the statement reads in part.

The flood also overwhelmed the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Garbai Elkanemi, forcing him to leave his palace and take refuge at the Government House.

President Tinubu ordered the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist the flood victims and provide immediate relief to the affected areas, while reassuring Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of the Federal Government’s commitment to providing all necessary resources and support to address the humanitarian crisis.
“The President remains committed to mobilising federal resources to support the state during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
