Liverpool Survive Scare to Defeat Southampton in EPL Clash
Liverpool had to come from behind to beat Southampton FC in their English Premier League (EPL) clash on Sunday. The game ended in a 2-3 thriller away at the St. Mary’s stadium.
A Mo Salah double and a goal from Szoboszlai helped see off the Saints.
Liverpool took the lead in the 30th minute of the clash through Szoboszlai.
The Reds would not, however, go into the break with the lead as Southampton were awarded a penalty after a check by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Adam Armstrong stepped up to the spot, had his kick denied by Caoimhin Kelleher, and scored on the rebound to level the scores, 1-1, going into the break.
Liverpool dominated the second half but then slumped to a surprise Southampton goal in the 56th minute, Armstrong setting up Mateus Fernandes for a sweet left foot finish.
Liverpool recovered 9 minutes later with Mo Salah to the rescue.
Liverpool probed and probed for that all-important winner that would see them stretch their lead at the top to 8 points.
Southampton remained resolute though, but were unfortunately undone when Yukinari Sugawara handled the ball in his box to give Liverpool a penalty.
Mo Salah tucked home the spot-kick and consolidated the Reds position at the top.
Liverpool now lead Manchester City, Chelsea and the rest of the pack with a clash with Pep Guardiola’s men next week looming large.
