Leverkusen drops Victor Boniface from Champions League matchday squad
German side, Bayer Leverkusen, are set to drop Super Eagles’ Victor Boniface from their matchday squad to take on French side, Brest, in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) on Wednesday.
This comes after the player sustained injuries in a car crash on Sunday.
Xabi Alonso told the Bild that the player has not suffered serious injuries but he needs to be in the right frame of mind. “‘Boni’ is not in the squad. Fortunately, it wasn’t too serious. But an accident always has an effect. He’s feeling better, but he wasn’t ready.
The game comes too early for him. Physically he feels better, but it’s also an emotional thing. After what happened, it’s a precautionary measure,” Alonso explained, according to Bild.
“He is missing for health reasons. He has a small wound on his hand, a small cut on his right foot. But it’s more about the shock and coming to terms with his accident. We took the decision that he would not fly with us together – the doctors, [Bayer 04 managing director for sport] Simon Rolfes, ‘Boni’ and myself.”
Boniface had netted his side’s winner versus Frankfurt in the league a day before the accident.
He took to his social media after the crash to disclose the nasty development.
The player escaped any serious damages but was still hospitalized afterwards.
Leverkusen will hope Boniface will be fit enough to feature in their weekend Bundesliga clash with Werder Bremen.
