First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Speaks on Senate Controversy Over Sexual Harassment Allegations
The Nigerian Senate over sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has weighed in, calling for decorum and respect within the legislative chamber.
Speaking ahead of International Women’s Day, Tinubu addressed the ongoing controversy sparked by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who accused Akpabio of making unwanted advances toward her.
The allegations surfaced following a heated exchange on the Senate floor on February 20, when Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio clashed over seating arrangements. Days later, the Kogi Central lawmaker publicly claimed that her troubles in the Senate began after she rejected Akpabio’s alleged advances. On Wednesday, she formally submitted a sexual harassment petition against him.
However, the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges swiftly dismissed the petition, citing procedural lapses and legal constraints.
Addressing journalists on the matter, the First Lady emphasized the importance of maintaining the Senate’s integrity.
“I know with what is going on in the Senate, you may wonder why I haven’t taken a position,” she said. “I believe the Senate is handling the issue appropriately because that is its duty. We shouldn’t be hearing things like this. It’s a mature chamber and should be treated with respect. It is an honor to be there.”
Tinubu, who served in the Senate for 12 years, also urged Nigerian women to assert themselves in leadership roles, advocating for self-respect and resilience in male-dominated spaces.
“Women, raise yourselves. Don’t be in a position where men talk to you anyhow. You can always shut them down before they even start,” she advised.
Reflecting on the progress of women in leadership, the First Lady acknowledged figures like Zuriel Oduwole, who has been a vocal advocate for peace and empowerment. She also expressed confidence in the capabilities of Nigerian youths, encouraging women to hold their heads high and continue striving for excellence.
