Kaduna, PH Refineries Undergoing Total Overhaul to Meet Global Standards – NNPCL
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced that the 150,000 barrels per day (bpd) Kaduna Refinery and Port Harcourt Refinery are undergoing a comprehensive overhaul to elevate them to world-class standards. This move follows the successful rehabilitation of the 60,000 bpd Warri Refinery and the first Port Harcourt Refinery.
Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL, made this statement on Thursday in response to comments by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who had questioned the viability and operational status of the rehabilitated refineries. Soneye emphasized that the ongoing work is not the typical Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) but a thorough transformation designed to ensure sustainability.
“A significant milestone for us has been the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries,” Soneye said, adding, “similar efforts are progressing at the Kaduna and second Port Harcourt refineries.”
Inviting Obasanjo to see the progress firsthand, Soneye said, “We extend an invitation to our esteemed former president to witness this historic journey. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his insights and guidance.”
President Bola Tinubu also lauded NNPCL’s achievements, describing the reopening of the Warri Refinery as a major victory for Nigeria’s energy sector.
“The restart of Warri Refinery today brings joy and gladness to me and Nigerians. This will further strengthen the hope and confidence of Nigerians for a greater and better future that we promised,” Tinubu said in a statement on December 30, 2024.
Highlighting NNPCL’s transformation, Soneye credited the progress to “visionary leadership” under NNPCL’s board and Group CEO Mele Kyari, alongside Tinubu’s transformative energy policies.
