Justin Trudeau, Canada’s Prime Minister, Expected to Step Down This Week

Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, is reportedly preparing to announce his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party this week, according to a report by The Globe and Mail. The news, citing unnamed sources, comes amidst mounting pressure from within his party and growing public discontent.

Tensions within the Liberal Party escalated following the December 16 resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. Freeland’s departure, accompanied by a sharp critique of Trudeau’s policies, has deepened divisions in the party. Over 20 Liberal lawmakers have publicly or privately called for Trudeau to step down, highlighting the increasing strain on his leadership.

According to reports, key advisers believe Trudeau may struggle to recover from the political fallout caused by Freeland’s resignation. The Liberal Party, which holds 153 seats in the House of Commons, faces an uncertain future as members prepare for a caucus meeting on Wednesday. Trudeau’s resignation would spark a leadership contest to determine the party’s next leader and, consequently, Canada’s next prime minister.

Adding to the pressure, a recent Nanos Research survey shows the opposition Conservative Party significantly widening its lead ahead of a looming election year. Trudeau’s retreat from the public eye—spending much of the holidays at a ski resort in western Canada and avoiding media interactions—has further fueled speculation about his political future.
