Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun Sworn in as 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria
On Monday, September 30, President Bola Tinubu officially swore in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, following her confirmation by the Senate on September 25, 2024. The event took place in the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja.

Justice Kekere-Ekun succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who retired on August 22, 2024, after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by three of her predecessors: the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, alongside Justice Mahmud Mohammed and Justice Walter Onnoghen. Justice Ariwoola, her immediate predecessor, was also present.

Kudirat Kekere-Ekun’s family members and fellow justices of the Supreme Court filled the chamber, adding a personal touch to the formal proceedings. This marks her second oath of office in just five weeks; she was previously sworn in by President Tinubu in an acting capacity on August 23, prior to her Senate confirmation.
