Iran to Hold Crucial Nuclear Talks with European Powers in Geneva on Friday

Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran

Iran is set to hold crucial talks with three European powers—Britain, France, and Germany—on its controversial nuclear program in Geneva on November 29, following a recent resolution passed by the U.N. atomic watchdog. The talks come amid heightened tensions after the resolution, which the U.S. and the European powers backed, condemned Tehran’s actions regarding its nuclear activities.

The resolution has sparked a defiant response from Iran, with government officials announcing plans to ramp up its nuclear capabilities by activating numerous advanced centrifuges used to enrich uranium. This move follows Iran’s decision to breach limits set by the 2015 nuclear agreement after the U.S. withdrew from the pact in 2018 under former President Donald Trump, reimposing stringent sanctions on Tehran.

Kyodo news agency reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s government is eager to find a diplomatic solution to the nuclear impasse, especially with the upcoming inauguration of U.S. President-elect Joe Biden in January. A senior Iranian official confirmed that the talks would proceed as scheduled, reiterating Tehran’s commitment to resolving the nuclear issue through diplomacy. “Iran has never left the talks,” the official stated.

The 2015 nuclear deal, which Iran struck with six major world powers, aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. However, following the U.S. exit from the agreement, Iran began expanding its nuclear activities, including increasing its stockpile of enriched uranium, refining it to higher fissile purity, and enhancing its centrifuge technology to accelerate uranium production.

Despite indirect talks between President Biden’s administration and Tehran to revive the deal, progress has stalled. During his election campaign in September, President-elect Trump stressed the urgency of a deal, warning that the consequences of inaction were too dire to ignore.
