House of Reps investigates killing of student by police over N500 in Imo
The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into the extrajudicial killing of the one Ifeanyi Okafor by a police officer right opposite the Okwelle Police Station in Onuimo Local Government Area, Imo State.
The police officer was said to have demanded the sum of N500 from Okafor, and fatally shot him when his demand was not met.
The resolution to probe the incident followed a motion moved by the Chairman, House Committee on Aviation, Mrs. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, who said a police team stopped the victim on the highway to demand the bribe.
“It is a pathetic story. This boy did not have money to pay for his school fees. His father, who is poor, was the one who advised Okafor to assist a lorry driver as a ‘motor boy’ in order to make some money for his fees,” Onyejeocha said.
“On their way to Okigwe to deliver sand, the police team stopped their lorry. The policemen demanded N500, but the boy said they didn’t have the money.
“The next thing was that a policeman pointed a gun at Okafor and shot him. This is one extrajudicial killing too many in recent years,” she added.
