Horrible story of how Nigerian soldier turned “terrorist”
He didn’t just desert the Nigerian Army. He became a “terrorist.”
Two weeks after being deployed to Maiduguri to help Nigeria stop Boko Haram, “former” Lance Corporal Adegoke allegedly decided to make away with the tools he was given to fight the insurgents.
Unnamed police sources who arrested him said he used his military assault rifle and uniform to terrorize the people he once swore to protect.
That was how the protector became an oppressor, so to speak.
Residents of Ikpoba Hill, Upper Mission and its environs in Benin (Edo State) are living witnesses to the “terrorism” Adegoke reportedly unleashed before being nabbed by Nigerian law enforcers.
The alleged army deserter claimed to have served with the 29 Battalion, Nigerian Army, in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
Military discipline seemed all rosy till he was deployed to Maiduguri to fight the Boko Haram.
Police sources said he spent only two weeks in Maiduguri and the fled in January…and formed a robbery gang.
The authorities are investigating the issue even as it remains unclear whether Adegoke will be tried as a civilian or a soldier..
