Gunmen Kill Five Farm Workers in Ondo State Attack
Ajegunle-Powerline community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State was thrown into mourning after gunmen attacked a farm, killing at least five people, according to eyewitness accounts.
Akin Olowolafe, a resident of the community, revealed that the attack occurred around 3 p.m. on Tuesday when suspected herders stormed the farmland, opening fire indiscriminately. The victims, he said, were farm labourers hired from Plateau and Kaduna states.
“They shot sporadically, killing five of our workers. This is how they usually come to disturb and destroy our crops,” Olowolafe lamented. “We have reported such incidents to the state government and security agencies multiple times, but no concrete action has been taken to stop them.”
The recurring attacks, he added, have left the community in constant fear, forcing many farmers to abandon their farmlands.
Confirming the incident, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, stated that an investigation was underway to uncover the full details of the attack.
“There was an attack on the community, and police are still investigating. However, I cannot yet confirm the number of casualties,” she said.
In the aftermath of the violence, local hunters and members of the vigilante group in Akure North reportedly transported the victims’ bodies to the morgue at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMETH) in Akure.
