No Data Breach: Guaranty Trust Bank Denies Hacking Reports
Guaranty Trust Bank, one of Nigeria’s leading commercial banks, has denied reports that its website was hacked and user data compromised.
Daily Post reported that customers trying to access the bank’s website, www.gtbank.com, received error messages around 10:30 PM on Wednesday night, suggesting a possible hack.
However, the newspaper, citing a highly-placed source from the bank, described the report as false and attributed the difficulties to connectivity issues.
“It’s false,” the source said. “What we are experiencing is a connectivity issue and it has nothing to do with the alleged hacking.”
Nigerian banks often face cyberattacks that can result in substantial financial losses.
Earlier this year, the Chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) revealed that Nigerian banks lost ₦8 billion to cybercrimes in 2022.
In April 2024, stakeholders in the Nigerian banking sector claimed that Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) lost ₦10 billion in the second quarter of 2023.
