Ghana’s Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), conceded defeat in the country’s presidential race after a tightly contested election. Bawumia, who cast his ballot in his hometown of Walewale on December 7, had faced stiff competition from former president John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). In his statement, Bawumia expressed his respect for the results, confirming that Mahama had won the presidency “decisively” in the elections.

The vice president went on to congratulate Mahama directly, revealing that he had called his opponent to offer his congratulations. “I have called John Mahama and I’ve congratulated him,” Bawumia shared, emphasizing his respect for the democratic process.

Mahama himself confirmed the congratulatory call in a post on his X account, marking a peaceful transition of power in a country where political rivalry often runs high.

Bawumia’s campaign had been plagued by growing public dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of Ghana’s economic struggles, particularly the soaring cost of living, which became the central issue of the election. As vice president, Bawumia faced criticism for the government’s economic policies, but despite his efforts to address these concerns, the NPP was unable to secure enough support to secure a second term.

In addition to Mahama’s victory in the presidential race, the NDC emerged victorious in the parliamentary elections.
