The Gambia: Yahya Jammeh to rule for three more months
January 18, 2017
Yahya Jammeh will preside over the affairs of The Gambia for at least three more months, the country’s National Assembly has decided.
The parliament’s announcement comes on the back of the dictator declaring a 90-day state of emergency in the country on Tuesday.
Jammeh’s new 90-day run begins Wednesday, the day his 22-year run as President was supposed to end.
Mr. Adama Barrow, winner of the December 2 presidential election in the country, would have been sworn-in Thursday, January 19.
Nigeria has deployed a warship to put further pressure on Mr Jammeh to step down, while British and Dutch travel agencies have begun scrambling to evacuate thousands of tourists on Wednesday.
