French Government Collapses: Prime Minister Barnier to Resign

The French government collapsed on Wednesday after Members of Parliament (MPs) passed a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Michel Barnier.

A total of 288 votes was needed to end the government of Barnier, who was appointed Prime Minister by President Emmanuel Macron three months ago after his party failed to win a majority in parliament, forcing him to form an alliance. However, 311 votes were cast to bring down his government.

The vote has left France, Europe’s second-largest economy, without a government, as the Prime Minister oversees critical domestic affairs.

“We have reached a moment of truth and responsibility,” Barnier said during Wednesday’s parliamentary debate ahead of the vote. “This reality will not disappear by the magic of censure motions.”

With the vote of no confidence passed, Barnier and his government are expected to resign, marking the shortest government in France’s history and the first time in over 60 years that a Prime Minister’s tenure has ended through such a vote.

This development has plunged Macron’s France into another phase of uncharted territory as he struggles to navigate heightened political tensions in the country.

Although Macron’s tenure is set to last until 2027, opposition voices are growing louder in their calls for his resignation. Additionally, he now risks entering the new year without a budget, as the end of Barnier’s term means the 2025 budget before the National Assembly will be automatically rejected.
