BREAKING: Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari dies in London

Swearing in

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 82. He died in a clinic in London, United Kingdom, following an illness.

His longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu, announced the news on Sunday in a post on the social media platform X. In the post, Shehu wrote, “INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIRRAJIUUN,” a traditional Islamic phrase said upon a person’s death, and confirmed the passing of the former president.

Mr. Buhari had been in the UK for medical treatment since April 2025. While initial reports described the trip as a routine check-up, it was later confirmed he had fallen ill and was receiving care. An aide, Bashir Ahmad, had recently refuted claims that the former president was in critical condition or in an intensive care unit, stating that he was “stable and responding well to treatment.”

Muhammadu Buhari served as the President of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023. A retired major general in the Nigerian Army, he also served as the nation’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985. His presidency was marked by frequent medical trips to London, which had often led to public discussion about his health.
