Former city cop found guilty of rape, faces 263 years imprisonment

Former Oklahoma City police officer, Daniel Holtzclaw, was, Thursday, found guilty of 18 of 36 counts levied against him.

The charges include first-degree rape, second-degree rape, sexual battery, stalking, burglary, indecent exposure, and forcible oral sodomy

After deliberating extensively for four days, an all white jury found him guilty of 18 of the charges and recommended a total of 263 years imprisonment.

Holtzclaw was accused of raping or sexually victimizing 13 women. All 13 of them, black and between 17 to 50 years old, testified against him in the trial.

Prosecutors reportedly accused Holtzclaw of preying on economically disadvantaged women in one of the state’s poorest neighborhood, by using his badge to force victims to heed to his escalating crimes that went from groping to rape.

The Oklahoma City Police Department fired Holtzclaw in January after the allegations against him surfaced.

Of the verdict, the OCPD, in a statement said:

“The Oklahoma City Police Department is pleased with the jury’s decision regarding the Daniel Holtzclaw trial. It was a long and difficult trial and deliberation process for all involved. It is obvious the jury took their responsibilities very seriously and considered every piece of evidence presented to them.

We are proud of our detectives and prosecutors for a job well done.

To the jury, we thank you for your service.

We are satisfied with the jury’s decision and firmly believe justice was served.”

Formal sentencing has been scheduled for January 2016.
