Flash Floods Kill 3, Displace Over 1,400 Households in Adamawa
At least three people have lost their lives and more than 1,400 households displaced after flash floods swept through parts of Adamawa State earlier this week.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that heavy rainfall on Tuesday triggered flooding in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas, submerging homes, farmlands, and key infrastructure.
A joint rapid assessment carried out by NEMA’s Yola operations office, the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), and other partners revealed that 13 communities were directly affected. According to the agency, more than 40 people sustained injuries while several families were forced to abandon their homes.
“Some of the displaced households are taking refuge in host communities, while others have been relocated to the flood resettlement camp in Girei,” NEMA said in a statement.
The agency identified urgent humanitarian needs such as food, shelter, medical support, and access to safe drinking water. It also appealed to residents in flood-prone areas to heed early warning alerts as the rainy season continues.
NEMA pledged ongoing collaboration with ADSEMA, local emergency committees, and humanitarian organisations to provide relief and reduce the impact of disasters in the state.
This latest incident follows devastating floods in July, which claimed at least 25 lives and displaced more than 5,500 people across Yola and nearby communities.
