Fire razes section of Alaba market in Lagos
A section of the Alaba International Market in Lagos was engulfed by fire on Tuesday evening, leaving traders in distress as they watched their shops go up in flames.
Videos circulating on social media platform X showed thick plumes of smoke and fierce flames consuming the furniture section of the market, which is located near the Ojo Local Government Secretariat in Ojo town.
According to eyewitness accounts, the fire reportedly started from “a little spark” before spreading rapidly through adjoining shops. One X user, Ikechukwu Ude, who shared footage of the scene, described the incident as “heartbreaking,” noting how quickly the blaze escalated.
Other videos captured helpless traders standing at a distance, visibly distraught as the inferno ravaged their goods and property.
Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were seen battling to contain the blaze. Speaking with TheCable on Wednesday, Shakiru Amodu, Director of Public Affairs for the fire service, confirmed the incident, adding that detailed information was still being compiled.
“I’m aware of the incident; the Ojo fire station handled the scene along Ijegun. It happened just yesterday,” Amodu said. “It’s best to check back later in the day maybe in an hour for more detailed updates.”
The Alaba International Market, situated along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, is one of West Africa’s largest commercial hubs, known for its thriving trade in electronics, furniture, and building materials.
As investigations continue into the Alaba Market inferno, authorities have urged traders and residents to prioritize fire safety measures to prevent further tragedies.
