Fire engulfs 4th floor of popular plaza on Lagos Island
Firefighters battled an inferno that erupted on the fourth floor of Emab Plaza, located behind Mandilas on Taiwo Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday evening.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received the emergency call at 7:23 PM, immediately dispatching crews from both Ebute Elefun and Oniru fire stations to contain the blaze.
Olajide Ogabi, Deputy Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the emergency response and ongoing containment efforts. He praised the swift action of fire service officers who responded to the incident.
“The incident prompted a swift response from the officers of Lagos fire and rescue service,” Ogabi stated, emphasising the coordinated effort between the two fire stations.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at the time of this report, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. Officials indicated that a full investigation will be conducted once the blaze is completely extinguished and the scene is secured.
Emab Plaza, a prominent commercial building in the bustling Lagos Island business district, houses various offices and retail establishments. The building’s location behind Mandilas, a well-known commercial landmark on Taiwo Street, made it easily identifiable for emergency responders.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of fire safety in Lagos’ commercial districts, where high-rise buildings and dense urban development require sophisticated emergency response capabilities.
As of the time of this report, no casualties or injuries have been reported in connection with the fire. However, officials have not yet provided information about potential property damage or the number of people evacuated from the building.
