Fire destroys goods worth millions at old market in Niger State
Goods worth millions of Naira were destroyed after a fire razed stalls at Bida old market in Niger state Thursday night.
The fire started at about 8.30 p.m. and no fewer than 600 shops were razed to the ground.
Residents spent the night attempting to put the fire out before firemen from the Bida Fire Service and Federal Polytechnic Fire Service arrived.
The cause of the fire could not be ascertained.
Alhaji Mohammad Badugu, the Chairman, Bida Local Government, confirmed to newsmen that the entire market was affected by the fire.
“We are expecting more fire-fighting vehicles from Minna as our neighbouring local government’s fire-fighting engines are not in good condition,” Bagudu said.
Bagudu confirmed that goods destroyed in the fire include clothes, motorcycles, building materials, bags of maize, beans, rice, palm oil and poultry products.
He expressed shock at the development, promising that the council would try to rebuild the market without much delay.
