Federal Government Sues Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for Alleged Defamation on Live TV

The Federal Government has initiated legal proceedings against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central in the National Assembly, over allegedly defamatory statements made during a live television broadcast.

Filed on May 16, 2025, at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, the suit—marked CR/297/25—names Akpoti-Uduaghan as the sole defendant. The government contends that the senator made public imputations with the knowledge or reasonable belief that they would damage the reputation of another individual. The charges are based on Section 391 of the Penal Code, Cap 89, Laws of the Federation, 1990, and are punishable under Section 392.

In a development that underscores the seriousness of the case, a witness list obtained by TheCable includes high-profile figures such as Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, both expected to testify during the trial.
