‘She jumped from the 3rd floor’-Abuja Police share new details on Sommie’s death

Ajao Adewale, Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has revealed new details about the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor and producer with Arise Television, during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Abuja.

Somtochukwu, popularly known as Sommie, died in the early hours of Monday after gunmen invaded her apartment complex in the Katampe area of the city. A private security guard on duty at the time was also killed.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Adewale said the assailants shot one of the security personnel, triggering panic among residents. According to him, Sommie, who lived on the third floor of the building, attempted to escape by jumping from her apartment.

“She occupied an apartment on the topmost floor of the building. Out of fear and panic, she jumped down from the third floor,” the police commissioner explained.

Responding officers reportedly found her unconscious on the ground. She was rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where medical personnel attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but were unable to revive her.

Adewale emphasised that contrary to circulating rumours, Sommie was not shot by the attackers. “This was clearly an armed robbery. Handsets and cash were taken from wallets, which were later found discarded on the floor,” he said, adding that the building houses 18 flats, 16 of which were occupied at the time of the incident.

Security operatives have launched an investigation into the attack as residents of the FCT continue to express concern over rising insecurity in the nation’s capital.
