Explosion rocks Libya police academy, kills “at least 40”, wounds many others

Dozens of people were killed, Thursday morning, when a truck bomb hit a police training centre in Zliten, Libya, reports say.
It was a water truck that was rigged with explosives. It’s not clear if it exploded at the gate or inside the compound, BBC reports.
Reports differ on the number of casualties recorded but the BBC quotes the mayor of Zliten as saying at least 40 people were killed.
A local news agency reports that at least 50 people have been killed and 127 wounded while Reuters reports that at least 65 people were killed.
There are however indications that the situation may be worse.

The country’s health ministry has already declared a state of emergency calling on all hospitals in the Libyan capital, Tripoli and the western city, Misratat, to prepare to receive the dead and wounded.
Libya has been in chaos since the overthrow of long serving ruler Col Muammar Gaddafi in October 2011 giving room for the Islamic State (IS) to gain presence in the country..
