El-Rufai Resigns from APC, Vows to Unite Opposition Against Ruling Party

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a departure from the party’s core values and a lack of commitment from its leadership to address internal issues.

In a statement released on Monday, el-Rufai criticized the ruling party’s trajectory, stating that recent developments indicate an unwillingness among those in power to acknowledge or resolve the party’s growing challenges.

“Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party,” he said.

The former governor, who served from 2015 to 2023, revealed that he will now focus on rallying opposition leaders under a unified front to challenge the APC in upcoming elections.

“As a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to join us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027 by the Grace of God,” el-Rufai declared.

He called on his supporters and Nigerians concerned about the nation’s future to align with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), expressing hope that the party would lead Nigeria toward a brighter future.

El-Rufai has been a vocal critic of President Bola Tinubu’s government, particularly following the Senate’s decision to withhold his confirmation as a minister. In February, he dismissed claims that the National Assembly rejected his nomination, asserting instead that Tinubu deliberately excluded him from his cabinet.
