Edo police nab man producing fake gin by reading ‘ingredients’ on bottles
Chizoba Okafor had been selling fake gin and wine to unsuspecting customers at his bar in Upper Mission area of Benin, Edo State.
He had been producing the drinks with a “formula” he simply described as reading ‘ingredients’ on bottle labels.
Until he was caught by the police in the state about two weeks ago.
The 35-year-old said on Tuesday that he had engaged in the business in order to be able to cater for his family.
Chizoba said he started producing wine because his master refused to “settle him” after serving him for years.
“It has not been long since I started the business because I have a bar where I sell pepper soup and palmwine with my wife and three children,” he told newsmen.
“Everything (ingredient) is written on the labels. I am not a graduate; I use my formula to do it.
“I do it to earn a living because I cannot rob with a gun. Nobody has complained about the drinks,” he confidently claimed.
