Edo Gov Election: Police Bars State-run Security Units From Polls
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has barred any security oufit run by the state from aprtaking in the forthcoming Edo Governorship elections.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, issued this notice at a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state capital, Benin.
The Edo State Security Network (ESSN), in particular, were barred from carrying out any function at the polls.
The Police Chief revealed that about 43,000 personnel from the police, military, and other relevant security agencies will be on ground on D-day to ensure a smooth election process.
Therefore, no private or state-owned security outfits will be granted any function, Egbetokun said.

“No private or state-owned security apparatus would be allowed to operate during and after the election,” Egbetokun warned.
“All quasi-security operatives in Edo State should refrain from participating in Edo election. Activities of Edo State Security Network which has been suspended remain suspended,” the IGP said.
He disclosed that entry and exit into the state on election day will be secured by the military.
In its contribution, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has vowed to conduct a proper election, with election materials to be adequately transported to both land and riverine areas of the state.
The election in the state is set to take place on September 21, 2024.
