E1 set to boost Lagos’s economy and global recognition, but is Nigeria’s megacity ready to host the world?

In a groundbreaking announcement that solidifies Lagos’s position on the global stage, the vibrant Nigerian metropolis is set to host Africa’s inaugural E1 World Championship race on October 4th and 5th, 2025.

This landmark event will see the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing series electrify the city’s waterways, marking a significant milestone for both sustainable marine innovation and the burgeoning profile of Lagos.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed the exciting development, emphasising that hosting the E1 Championship is more than just a sporting event; it’s a powerful statement about Lagos’s commitment to clean energy, sustainability, and its readiness to engage in global conversations on marine transportation.

The announcement came after Governor Sanwo-Olu’s recent visit to Monaco, where he experienced the E1 Racing Championship firsthand, reinforcing his belief in the series’ innovative spirit.

What you should know about the E1 Championship

The UIM E1 World Championship is not just another racing series; it represents a pioneering leap into the future of marine mobility. Co-founded by Alejandro Agag, the visionary behind Formula E and Extreme E, and former Formula 1 engineer Rodi Basso, the championship features cutting-edge electric-powered boats known as RaceBirds. These agile vessels are capable of reaching speeds of over 90 km/h (50 knots), showcasing the immense potential of electric propulsion on water.

At its core, the E1 series is driven by a profound commitment to sustainability. Its mission extends beyond the thrill of racing to actively promote clean energy solutions, advance sustainable water mobility, and foster technological innovation within the marine industry.

The championship actively partners with various organisations to raise awareness about critical environmental issues, particularly marine pollution, and supports impactful initiatives such as mangrove restoration projects. The races are strategically designed to be accessible and engaging for spectators, often taking place on circuits close to vibrant shorelines.

So far the E1 championship has garnered significant attention and investment from a diverse array of high-profile team owners, including sports icons like Tom Brady and Rafael Nadal, and entertainment luminaries such as Will Smith and Didier Drogba.

Lagos: A Global Stage for Innovation and Sustainability

For Lagos, hosting the E1 Championship is a strategic move that aligns perfectly with the city’s ambitious vision for a greener, more prosperous, and globally recognised future. The benefits are multifaceted and far-reaching, especially economically. The event is poised to attract thousands of international spectators, media personnel, and marine technology enthusiasts, driving tourism revenue, stimulating local businesses, and creating numerous job opportunities across various sectors, from hospitality to logistics.

Also, the E1 Championship provides an unparalleled global platform to showcase the unique vibrancy, rich culture, and dynamic spirit of Lagos. With the eyes of the world on its waterways, Lagos will have the opportunity to present its diverse heritage, innovative spirit, and the warmth of its people to an international audience.

Lagos will also join an elite roster of host cities like Monaco, Venice, and Jeddah, and this will significantly elevate its status as a global city and a beacon of green innovation on the African continent. This event is a pivotal moment in Africa’s increasing engagement with global sustainability efforts and high-profile sporting events, reinforcing its role as a key player in the international arena.

Perhaps, the championship will also serve as a powerful catalyst for innovation, attracting investment and fostering collaboration in marine technology and sustainable practices, keying into Lagos’s ambition to become a regional hub for technological advancement and environmental stewardship.

Are we ready?

Considering the state of Lagos and how many global sporting events have not been held in Nigeria in recent years, we need to ask if we are ready and why the common Lagosian should be excited about the city hosting a tournament they know almost nothing about. Security continues to be a concern, but I do not doubt that there would be a heavy police presence in Lagos, especially on the Island where most of the guests and participants are most likely going to stay.

Governor Sanwo-Olu does not seem perturbed, expressing immense optimism about the championship, describing it as a “major milestone” for both the sport and for Lagos. He highlighted the support from Afreximbank, particularly their investment in Team Drogba, as a testament to the collaborative spirit driving this initiative.

The E1 Championship in Lagos is more than just a race; it’s a declaration of intent, signalling Lagos’s readiness to lead the charge in sustainable development and to showcase its immense potential to the world. As the countdown to October 2025 begins, all eyes will be on Lagos as it embarks on this historic journey, setting a new precedent for African cities in the global pursuit of a greener and more innovative future.
