“Don’t drink and drive in the name of Sallah” – LASEMA begs Lagos residents

SALAH CELEBRATION AND EMBER MONTHS: LASEMA BOSS ADVISES LAGOSIANS ON SAFETY

Following the declaration of Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th September 2016 by the Federal Government, as public holidays for the Muslim faithful for the celebration of EID-IL-KABIR, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has advised Lagosians to be safety and security cautious during these periods.

Making the declaration in his office today, the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Michael Akindele advised people to be safety cautious and vigilant with close monitoring of persons and activities around them in securing safety of lives and properties of all Lagosian.

In addition, he said that people are also in the habit of over speeding, drinking of alcohol and non compliance to traffic rules and regulations during this period which most times leads to series of accidents. He therefore advised drivers to be safety cautious while driving, saying that offenders of such offences would be prosecuted by the appropriate authorities.

In the same vein, he also explained that contrary to negative reports about the Ember Months (September to December), which are most times referred to as bad period of happenings characterized by major auto crashes, fire outbreaks and other tragedies leading to various emergencies and disasters that often claim lives and properties, saying that these could be averted if only people could take to necessary precautions since these the months are just like every other month of the year.

Akindele noted that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Safety Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Nigerian Police Force, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and all the other agencies that are relevant in the management of emergencies in the State have been put on red alert to secure and protect the lives and properties of the people living and doing business in the State.

The General Manager therefore assured that the Lagos State Emergency Call Centre lines 767/112 are open 24 hours to any distress call from all the nooks and crannies of the State.

The General Manager stressed that the State Government is so much concerned with the safety of lives and properties of all Lagosians, and as such there would be punitive measures for persons who drive in a reckless manner without reasonable consideration for others, driving above the speed limit on highway, driving against traffic, overloading, under-age driving, usage of mobile phone while driving, non-use of seat belt and other traffic/ criminal offences.

Finally, he re-affirmed his Agency’s readiness and commitment in the management of emergency/disaster in the State through prompt intervention and extending its tentacles to all the nook and crannies of the State.
