Kamala Harris tops list of potential candidates to replace Joe Biden in 2024 Presidential Race

Democrats in the United States are in a rush to nominate a new candidate following President Joe Biden’s surprise withdrawal from the 2024 Presidential race on Sunday, July 21.

The decision was announced by the president on Sunday amid growing concerns over his age and ability to compete against Republican Donald Trump. Joe Biden also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the frontrunner to replace him after his announcement.

Today, Democratic leaders are making arrangements and plans for an important convention scheduled to take place in Chicago on August 19. During this convention, it is anticipated that Vice President Kamala Harris will be officially nominated as the party’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

Biden’s endorsement of Harris has provided a significant boost to her campaign, she has also received support from other key figures within the party, including prominent lawmakers and the Clintons.

However, other influential Democrats such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former President Barack Obama have not yet committed their support, indicating a cautious approach as the party charts this unprecedented course.

Democrat’s Leading Candidate, Kamala Harris

Harris, who made history as the first Black and South Asian woman vice president, appears to face minimal competition at this stage. Calls for an open convention have been subdued, with figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom endorsing her candidacy early on.

The Democratic ticket has been in disarray since Joe Biden’s lacklustre debate performance in June, allowing Republicans to consolidate around Donald Trump. Biden’s decision, which marks the first time in 56 years a sitting president has declined a second term bid, has injected new drama into the current election cycle.

Political analysts suggest that Harris is now the most likely nominee, following Biden’s exit and his endorsement of her candidacy. Trump, is now the oldest presidential nominee in US history at 78, wasted no time in responding via social media, dismissing Biden and calling for changes in the upcoming presidential debate arrangements.

Barrack Obama’s Reaction To Joe Biden’s Announcement

Former President of the United States, Barrack Obama has praised Joe Biden’s choice to step down from the Democratic presidential race, hailing him as “a patriot of the highest order” in an official statement.

In his official remarks, Obama emphasised Biden’s remarkable service and character, highlighting his profound impact as one of America’s most influential leaders.

He underscored Biden’s achievements, including his efforts in ending the pandemic, generating millions of jobs, reducing prescription drug costs, passing crucial gun safety laws, and spearheading historic investments to combat climate change.

Acknowledging the difficulty of Biden’s decision to not seek re-election, Obama said, “For him to look at the political landscape and decide that he should pass the torch to a new nominee is surely one of the toughest in his life.”

Obama commended Biden’s deep love for the country and dedication to public service, urging future leaders to follow his example. He expressed confidence in the Democratic Party’s ability to select a strong nominee, asserting, “I believe that Joe Biden’s vision of a generous, prosperous and united America will be on full display at the Democratic Convention.”
