Customs shoot farmer dead during raid in Ogun
The Nigeria Customs Service on Wednesday shot dead a son of a retired military officer in Yewa North LGA, Ogun State.
Channels TV reports that the 25-year-old from Ebute community along Oja-Odan Road, was shot dead during a raid to arrest smugglers within the community.
Eyewitnesses were quoted as saying that the deceased, a farmer, was shot on his way to his farm.
The Customs operatives had raided the area in the morning to catch fleeing smugglers, and Kehinde was accused of being a member of the criminals.
“They accused the deceased who was holding a cutlass and on his way to the farm of being a smuggler and shot him to death,” the witness said.
The operatives reportedly fled the scene after the shooting, but allegedly returned in fifteen vehicles to take away the deceased’s body. They were, however, stopped by some Army operatives believed to have been contacted by the deceased’s father.
Kehinde’s body was deposited at a morgue in Ilaro General Hospital.
The Ogun state Custom Relations Officer, Abdulah Maiwada, claimed that residents of the area attacked a team of Customs operatives who were on a trail to retrieve a smuggled military van.
Maiwada also claimed that the team had gone back to get more men in order to create peace with the residents, when a clash led to the shooting of one of the hoodlums in the leg. He said the victim died from the injury.
